John Scruggs

Memorial services for John L. Scruggs, 78, Eudora, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Cremation is planned.
Mr. Scruggs died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.
He was born April 10, 1930, in Leeds, S.D., the son of Roy Nicholas and Myrtle Talley Scruggs, and was raised by his mother and stepfather, Newton Dillavou.
He attended school in Leeds. He moved to Eudora in 1973.
Mr. Scruggs served in the U.S. Navy. He drove a city bus and a taxi before beginning a more than 20 year career with the Lawrence Fire Department. After retiring, he drove a school bus in Lawrence.
He was a member of Eudora United Methodist Church, the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 852, Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 309, and the Elks.
He married Doris Jeffries in 1951. She died Dec. 1, 1970.
Survivors include two sons, John L., Baldwin City, and Michael D., Lawrence; two daughters, Pamela G. Cooper, Fort Collins, Colo., and Vicki A. Scruggs, Eudora; a sister, Helen Farnsworth, Moorcroft, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, sent in care of the funeral home.
