Michael Sopko
Funeral Mass for Michael Sopko, age 67, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church 12800 W. 75th St., Shawnee. Inurnment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa.
Mr. Sopko lost his long battle with cancer on Saturday, Sept 5, 2009.
He was born May 29, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Mike and Stella (Nadolski) Sopko. He lived most of his childhood in Wickliffe and Willoughby. He moved to the Kansas City area while he was in the Air Force and liked it so well he decided to stay.
Mr. Sopko had a lifelong love of photography and gardening and was most at rest when cutting his grass and tending his many beautiful flowers. He and his family lived in Shawnee from November 1967 until May of 2007 when they moved to De Soto.
After his discharge from the Air Force in 1967, he started working for Crick Camera Shop, previously in Brookside. He worked there until the past couple months when his illness made it impossible to continue.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Lynn Sopko; a son, Michael Andrew; two daughters, Melissa MacDonald and husband Kenneth, and Lisa Sopko and husband Kevin Fogarty; and a sister, Jane Piszczor and husband Bart.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Amos Family Chapel, Shawnee.
The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society, sent in care of the funeral chapel, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS 66203.
