George Hartpence

Funeral services for George W. Hartpence, 95, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mr. Hartpence died April 13, 2010, at Rolling Hills Nursing Center, Topeka.
He was born Sept. 28, 1914, in rural Franklin County, the son of George and Sarah Belle (Jones) Hartpence.
Mr. Hartpence was a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II, where he was stationed in Hawaii and worked as a propeller mechanic. He worked at Douglas Aircraft and as a homebuilder in California. When he returned to Kansas, he worked at Hercules Ammunition Plant and also owned a used car business.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Lawrence and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He married Ruth Aileen Myers on April 20, 1937, in Topeka. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, LaWanda Fritzon, Topeka; a son, Doug and his wife Robin Hartpence, Lawrence; a daughter-in-law, Tricia Hartpence, Baldwin City; six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Roger, a granddaughter and his six siblings.
