LEE ALVIN SMITH
Lee Alvin Smith, a devoted husband, loving father, and respected veteran, peacefully passed away at the Healthcare Resort of Kansas City on July 23, 2023, at the age of 90. He was born on March 10, 1933, on a rural farm located 8 miles southwest of Hartford, Kansas, to his parents Verl and Mamie Smith.
Visitation to honor Lee’s life will be held at the Cornerstone Family Worship, Tonganoxie, 6:30-8:30pm Thursday, funeral services at the Hartford United Methodist Church, Friday 7-28-23 at 10:30 am.
Lee earned his bachelor’s degree in 1960 and then his masters from the Kansas Teachers college, Emporia, KS. Lee’s life was defined by his unwavering dedication to service and his deep-rooted faith. He retired after 40 years of exceptional service as the high school principal at Tonganoxie USD464 1966-1996, leaving a lasting impact on countless students, teachers, and staff members. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lee was an active member of the Kansas Quarter horse Racing Association, where he shared his passion for horses with like-minded enthusiasts.
A true patriot, Lee proudly served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954 as a Corporal during active duty. He continued his service as a Sergeant 1st Class in the Army Reserves until 1964. In addition to his military contributions, Lee was an esteemed member of the American Legion Post 0041 of Tonganoxie, Kansas, where he found camaraderie among fellow veterans.
Lee’s faith was an integral part of his life, and he was a devoted member of the Hartford United Methodist Church.
Lee is preceded in death by his devoted wife, Betty Rose Smith, son-in-law Don Smith, and brother Robert V. Smith.
He is survived by his loving children: son Ron (Kami) Smith of Palmer, Kansas, and daughters Janet Smith of Potwin, Kansas, Rhonda Smith of Lansing, Kansas, and Vicki Baxter of Pueblo, CO. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and cherished friend Anita Tingle of McLouth, KS.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to the USD #464 Education Foundation, or the Hartford United Methodist Church, 604 E 4th street Tonganoxie, KS 66086, in memory of Lee Alvin Smith.
