James Warden Grinter

James Warden Grinter, a longtime resident of the Tonganoxie area and devoted family man, passed away peacefully March 12, 2026, 89, in his home.

Born November 29, 1936 in Edwardsville KS, Jim grew up south of Tonganoxie, KS and spent much of his life farming and contributing to the local agricultural community in Leavenworth County. He was deeply connected to the land, and for many years, he and his family operated Grinter Farms. Jim started planting the sunflowers in the 1970s, which has grown into a beloved regional tradition. He was active in the Tonganoxie School Board, Tonganoxie Civic Club and received a Kansas forestry award for his conservation efforts.

Before leaving for the Navy, Jim married Mary Jane Brown of Tulsa, OK. They shared decades of partnership until her passing in 2023. Together they raised a family rooted in hard work and community. He is survived by his sons, Mark (Helena) Grinter of Manhattan, KS, and Ted (Kris) Grinter of Tonganoxie, KS; daughter Jennifer (Jeff) Stilgenbauer of Lawrence, KS; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; and extended family and friends who cherished his strength, generosity, humor and stories of farm life.

A celebration of life will be held at Kane’s Family Farm in Tonganoxie April 17 from 10a-­2p. Please come and share your memories. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Ascend Hospice and Palliative Care (please send through Quisenberry Funeral) or Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org)

Jim will be remembered for his dedication to family, his love of the Kansas countryside, and the joy he brought to so many through simple, heartfelt hospitality. He was definitely outstanding in his field!
