Joseph Ray Ebbert

Feb 16, 2026

Joseph Ray Ebbert, aged, 69, of Tonganoxie, Kansas, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, in Kansas City, Kansas, at Providence Medical Center, surrounded by his loving children. He leaves behind a legacy shaped by hard work and quiet resilience, enriched by wisdom, steady guidance, and an appreciation for life’s simple, meaningful moments, reflected in his distinguished legal career, his love for his family, and the lasting, cherished friendships he built over a lifetime.

Born on June 4, 1956, in Kansas City, Missouri, Joe was the only child of Archie and Dorothy (Lutz) Ebbert. He grew up in KCK and graduated from Washington High School in 1974. With a strong sense of ambition and purpose, he continued his education at Wichita State University, earning his Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice in 1977. His enduring commitment to justice and advocacy led him to pursue law at the University of Kansas School of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor in 1982. These accomplishments laid the foundation for a respected legal career spanning decades across Kansas and Missouri.

It was during his time at Wichita State that Joe met the love of his life, Diane Whitaker. Their connection was immediate and enduring, and they were united in marriage on October 28, 1978, in Washington, Kansas, surrounded by family and friends. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion, supporting one another’s dreams while navigating life’s ups and downs side by side. Their early years as newlyweds were spent building their careers and traveling before welcoming their son, Grant, in 1990, followed by twin daughters, Kate and Megan, in 1996. Fatherhood was one of Joe’s greatest joys. He coached his children’s sporting teams, took them to countless sporting events, and enjoyed time outdoors grilling and swimming at their family home. He was always there to answer a phone call at any hour, offering steady advice and always being a soft place to land.

While time with family brought him his greatest happiness, he was a devoted fan of the Wichita State Shockers, Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas City Royals. Each year he looked forward to fantasy football, proudly participating in a league with lifelong friends spanning more than three decades — dating back to when standings were tracked by hand, long before the internet. He also had a tender, playful side that shone most brightly when doting on his cherished granddogs, whose visits never failed to bring a smile to his face and warmth to his heart.

Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Diane Whitaker Ebbert; his parents, Archie and Dorothy Ebbert; and his parents-in-law, Warren and Mary Kay Whitaker. While his children mourn his passing, they take comfort in imagining Joe reunited once more with Diane — the love of his life and partner in all things — together again in peace.

He is survived by his son Grant and fiancée Sunnie Shedd; daughter Kate and her husband Jackson Dwyer; and daughter Megan and her partner Kyle Prosser.

A service celebrating Joe’s life will be held on February 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church, located at 303 E 4th Street, Tonganoxie, Kansas.

When honoring and remembering Joe, please raise a margarita in hand and let Jimmy Buffett play, reflecting on life’s simple moments.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Kansas School of Law Legal Aid Clinic, which provides free legal assistance to individuals who could not otherwise afford representation and has been recognized for its outstanding pro bono service.
