Tonganoxie basketball teams finish up 2022 portion of slate with road games at Baldwin
Tonganoxie High boys and girls basketball teams made the short trip Thursday down County Road 1 to play Frontier League rival Eudora.
Unfortunately for the visitors, things went south in both games.
The THS girls tried to hang with Eudora in the conference clash, but the Cardinals were too much for the Chieftains.
The game was tight in the first quarter, but EHS started to widen the gap in the second quarter and went on to win, 51-23.
EHS held the advantage in rebounds (39-27), assists (14-6) and steals (11-4). THS had one block against Eudora, while EHS had none. THS shot 22% from the field compared to Eudora’s 42%. THS shot just 13% from three-point land compared to Eudora’s 22%. Eudora also shot 47% from the free-throw line compared to 17% for THS.
Eudora is now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Frontier League. The Cardinals finished out the 2022 portion of the schedule with a 71-21 victory against 1-6 Veritas Christian.
THS dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Frontier League play.
Tonganoxie tried to get back on track before winter break with Tuesday’s game at Baldwin that took place after The Mirror’s print deadline.
Baldwin is 3-2 overall and 1-2 in Frontier League play. Both teams have had some tough losses, as the Bulldogs have lost games by 28 and 38 points. Tonganoxie’s losses have been by 44, 42 and 28.
Tonganoxie returns from winter break with three road games before the Tonganoxie Invitational: Jan. 6 at Ottawa (2-2), Jan. 9 at Pleasant Ridge (2-3) and Jan. 13 at Spring Hill (3-3).
The Tonganoxie High boys lost a heartbreaker Dec. 6 against Wamego and looked to build on that performance at Eudora.
The Cardinals had other ideas.
Tonganoxie scored just eight points in the first half and could never really rally against EHS.
THS lost, 49-24, and fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in Frontier League play on the season.
Eudora had strong night offensively, shooting 50% from the field. The Cards went 20-for-40 from the field, including 7-for-20 from beyond the arc.
Tonganoxie shot just 34.6% and attempted just nine shots inside the arc (4-for-9).
The Cardinals also had 20 points off turnovers, while the Chieftains had none.
Tonganoxie had one more game before winter break on Tuesday. That game took place at Baldwin after The Mirror’s print deadline. The Bulldogs were a perfect 5-0 entering the game.
After the break, Tonganoxie is at Ottawa (1-3) on Jan. 6, Pleasant Ridge (2-3) on Jan. 9 and at Spring Hill (1-4) on Jan. 13.
