Tonganoxie High volleyball drops matches to Piper, De Soto

Tonganoxie High volleyball seniors are ready to build on last year’s state appearance. Pictured, from left, are Mikinzi Smoots, Lucy Rieke, Kasia Baldock and Bailey Poje. THS opened the season Tuesday on the road after The Mirror’s print deadline. THS has a new coach in Barry Lenth as well.Tonganoxie High volleyball opened the season with two closes matches, but the Chieftains weren’t able to pick up a match victory in Barry Lenth’s first contests as THS coach.
Tonganoxie won its first match against De Soto, 25-18, but the Wildcats came back with identical 25-17 victories in the second and third sets on their way to the match victory.
Piper, meanwhile, swept Tonganoxie, 25-22, 25-16.
In the other match at DHS, De Soto swept Piper, 25-22, 25-22.
Tonganoxie’s next match is Thursday at Turner. The Chieftains then have their home opener Tuesday at home against Paola.
