Tonganoxie High senior Colton Brusven holds the new 8 Mile Showdown trophy as he celebrates a THS victory against Basehor-Linwood on Friday at Beatty Field with his teammates. Tonganoxie defeated longtime rival BLHS, 34-20, in the inaugural year of the traveling trophy.

Tonganoxie High senior Colton Brusven currently is the top rusher in Class 4A and No. 4 overall, according to maxpreps.com.

Teams submit statistics to the website, so the leaders are among those schools that keep statistics on the site.

Brusven 1,077 yards through six games this season. Tonganoxie is guaranteed three more games this season, so he likely will have at least three more Friday nights to add to that number.

Nemaha Central sophomore Carter Hajek (2A) and Spring Hill senior Colton McKanna (5A) lead all classes. Hajek has 1,157 so far for the undefeated Thunder, while McKanna has the same number of yards for the Broncos. Hajak averages 8.76 yards per carry, while McKanna has 7.51 per carry. Conway Springs senior Brayden Kunz (1A) is not far behind at No. 3 with 1,148 yards.

Brusven also unofficially has the career rushing record for THS. Brusven has 3,130 yards so far through three seasons. Current THS assistant coach Cole Holloway had 2,749 career yards from 2010-13, while Korbin Riedel had 2,416 total yards through four years from 2015-18. Tonganoxie statistics are compiled on maxpreps.com back to 2006. The Mirror continues to research THS football history to determine any other rushing leaders.

There was a stretch when four different Tonganoxie running backs appeared to set single-season rushing records across four years. It was a stretch that started with Dalton Bock’s 1,441-yard campaign in 2017. Korbin Riedel ran for 1,531 yards in 2018, while Cooper Cunningham accumulated 2,124 rushing yards in 2019 and then Tyler Bowden in 2020. Bowden amassed 2,326 yards in 2020 for the single-season record. He played for THS his senior year after setting the single-season rushing record at Free State his junior year in Lawrence.
