Mill Valley volleyball sweeps Tonganoxie; THS heading to Chanute substate

By Staff | Oct 18, 2023

Tonganoxie High volleyball faced some rugged competition in its final match before the postseason.

Mill Valley, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, swept THS in three sets, 25-20, 25-6, 25-13. The Jaguars improved to 30-5 on the season, while Tonganoxie finished up the regular season at 24-13.

Tonganoxie now will prepare for a Class 4A substate in Chanute.

THS is the No. 6 seed in the 4A East Bracket and will be in the Chanute substate Saturday.

No. 3 Chanute (25-8) will take on No. 14 Labette County (10-20) in the first substate semifinal at 2 p.m. Saturday. No. 6 Tonganoxie (24-12) will face No. 11 Bishop Miege (17-17) in the other semifinal after the first match concludes.

Tonganoxie will have to get past the defending state champion to have a shot at a second consecutive state berth, but THS won a meeting between the squads in late September.

If that match is any indication, it should be another exciting clash at substate, as the first meeting couldn’t have been any closer. Tonganoxie won, 25-23, 26-24, on Sept. 30 at the Ottawa Invitational.

The winner of each semifinal match will face each other in the championship later Saturday in Chanute.

Other substate sites in the East Bracket will be at No. 1 Rock Creek (27-6), No. 2 Independence (27-7) and No. 4 Eudora (21-8). West Bracket substates will be No. 1 Clearwater (31-3), No. 2 Towanda-Circle (29-5), No. 3 Andale (25-8) and No. 4 Ulysses (27-9).

Baldock hits 2,000 career assists

THS senior setter Kasia Baldock was recognized Tuesday for hitting the 2,000 career assists mark. She received a commemorative plaque as part of her recognition.

Krivjansky given shirt for line-judge longevity

Joe Krivjansky has served as a line judge for Tonganoxie High volleyball matches for some time.

He was given a shirt to commemorate those years at Tuesday’s match. Krivjansky has been watching those lines at volleyball matches for nearly 20 years. His first season was 2005.
