McLouth’s Platz wins girls wrestling regional title; Bulldogs sending 3 to state overall
McLouth High’s Leighanna Platz won a regional title Saturday at a Class 4-1A regional in Sabetha and helped the Bulldogs finish No. 10 as a team in the process.
In total, the Bulldogs will send three wrestlers to the state championships later this month at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
Platz, ranked No. 3 at 135 in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll, went 4-0 Saturday. She won all of her matches by fall in the first period. She defeated Tonganoxie senior Sydney Shepherd (9-24) in 1:03, Hayden senior Natalie Hopper (22-16) in 32 seconds, Santa Fe Trail sophomore Morgan Pickering (27-9) in 1:36 and then Wellsville senior Lainey Farley (30-11) in 1:45. The senior will take a 28-1 record to Salina.
MHS senior Somer Wyatt also earned a state berth.
Wyatt won her first two matches in the 130-pound division by fall in 20 seconds and 52 seconds, but lost in the semifinals in 58 seconds.
She bounced back with a victory in the consolation bracket against Jeff West sophomore Payge Vetsch (25-13). Wyatt won that match by fall (1:00) and then faced Tonganoxie sophomore Finley Keller in the consolation finals.
Wyatt won the match by fall a few seconds into the second period (2:05) and finished regionals in third place. She heads to state with a 19-7 record, while Finley Keller heads to Salina with a 25-18 record.
Marissa Caray is McLouth’s third wrestler headed to state. The senior will take a 21-11 record to Salina at 140.
She won her first match and then lost in the next round, but battled back in the consolation bracket. Caray won three matches and advanced to the consolation finals where she lost by fall to Nemaha Central freshman Autumn Feldkamp (14-9) in the final seconds of the second period (3:51).
MHS junior Bailey Wiehe also competed at regionals. She went 1-2 at Sabetha and finished up her season at 14-15.
