Tonganoxie High girls soccer notches OT victory against Lansing
Home was very sweet in overtime for the Tonganoxie High girls soccer team Thursday.
Playing against Lansing in their home opener, the Chieftains battled the Lions through two halves of scoreless soccer.
Both teams had chances to put a goal on the scoreboard, but they eventually would need overtime.
Then in OT, Tonganoxie’s Miley Maxwell connected for a shot about 20 yards out that sailed over the LHS goalie’s outstretched arms and into the north goal for a 1-0 victory. Baylie Igleheart had the assist on the successful shot.
The win moved Tonganoxie to 1-1-1 on the season.
THS played to a tie in the season opener, 1-1, at Atchison and then lost last week, 3-0, at Leavenworth.
For THS coach Jon Orndorff, these initial games have helped the squad figure out its groove with an influx of new pieces to the puzzle.
The first three games we’ve been working on figuring out playing together,” Orndorff said. “Adding five new players to the starting lineup from last season makes for the girls to have to figure things out.
“Against Lansing was our most complete game so far. We continue to create chances just like our first two games. We just need to continue working and put the ball in the back of the net. These girls are an exciting group to coach and I truly believe the sky is the limit for them.”
The squad will be back in action Tuesday in Kansas City, Kan., against Washington. The first Frontier League match of the season will be two days later on April 4 against Eudora.
