Tonganoxie went six innings with the No. 3 team in Class 5A on Friday.

THS and Blue Valley Southwest were in a scoreless tie until BV Southwest broke the stalemate in the top of the seventh.

The visitors scored three runs and went on to win, 3-0, at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

Merick Davenport threw the entire game, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out eight and walking two.

Both teams had six hits on the day, but Tonganoxie also committed three errors. Trevor McGraw led the offense with 2 hits, one of which was a double

THS moved to 4-5 overall after the tough loss, but the team is 2-0 in Frontier League play after an earlier victory against Eudora and a Thursday sweep at Spring Hill. The first game of any doubleheader counts toward the league standings.

It’s been a busy start to the season with the Chieftains already playing nearly half of their regular season games. The team will compete Thursday and Saturday at the Fort Scott tournament, but then the schedule will start to be 2-3 games each week.

The squad is back home Tuesday against Frontier League foe Paola.

“We played really well for the first six innings,” THS coach Mitch Loomis said about the game against Blue Valley Southwest. “We made a couple mistakes and then that’s the difference.”

He went on to say the team is learning a lot about itself, which was partially the point of the crazy schedule early in the season.
