Strong State-ments for Tonganoxie High track

By Shawn F. Linenberger/Staff - | May 30, 2024

Tonganoxie High 4x800 relay members Solomon Carter, Michael Bottary, Gavin Shupe and Parker Welsh display their medals Saturday at the state track and field championships at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. The relay placed second in 4A.

Tonganoxie High brought home quite a bit of hardware from the state track and field championships.

On the boys side, the 4×800 team won silver and broke a 33-year-old school record in the process, while the 4×100 team broke its own school record yet again on the way to a fourth-place finish. The 4×400 team took fifth as well.

The 4×800 team of Parker Welsh, Gavin Shupe, Michael Bottary and Solomon Carter finished with a time of 8 minutes, 4.22 seconds. That was nearly 7 seconds better than the previous school record set in 1991 (8:11).

Tonganoxie’s Tucker McGuire placed fifth in the discus with a 157-07 throw, as did Todd Brown in the 200 with a time of 11.08 seconds.

For the girls, Adalyn Schooler and Lucy Rieke led the way for the Chieftains.

Schooler placed third in the discus (113-2) and eight in the high jump (4-10).

Rieke took third in her final event in a THS uniform. The senior won bronze in the shot put (38-3.75)

EHS girls end Andale run

On the boys side, Andale won its third straight state title with 70.5 points. Bishop Miege took second with 61 and Coffeyville third with 59. The highest-finishing Frontier League team was Eudora with 37. Tonganoxie placed 13th with 25.

On the girls side, the Frontier League reigned supreme in a monumental way.

Eudora won the girls title with 68 points, knocking off Andale, which had won the past six state 4A championships on the girls side. Andale was runner-up this year with 55, Clearwater third with 51 and Baldwin fourth with 41.

Tonganoxie placed 20th with 13.
