Tonganoxie High baseball scores a run Friday at the Sabetha Tournament against Sabetha. THS would go on to defeat SHS on Friday and then Clay Center on Saturday before falling to Hayden in the championship.

Tonganoxie baseball placed second at the Sabetha Tournament over the weekend.

The Chieftains routed the host Blue Jays, 14-3, on Friday in 5 innings.

After dropping Sabetha, THS took care of Clay Center, 5-3, on Saturday.

Piercen Eccles pitched a complete game on the mound for the Chieftains. He went seven innings, striking out 8 and walking one batter. He gave up 5 hits on three runs, all of which were earned.

The victory against the Tigers set up a championship clash with Hayden. The Wildcats built an 8-1 lead, but THS responded with a 6-run fifth and trailed just 8-7. Hayden answered with a couple runs and held a 10-7 lead going into the final two innings. THS answered with a run in the top of the sixth, but couldn’t get any closer and fell, 10-8.

Talon Langford had a big tournament with the bat.

He had a home run against Sabetha, and doubles against Clay Center and Hayden.

Langford went 4-for-10 in the tournament. All of his hits were extra base-hits. In total, he had a homer and three doubles in the tourney. He also forced two walks.

The Chieftains entered play this week at 4-2 overall and 0-1 in Frontier League play. Tonganoxie’s offense has been fairly potent so far this season, but Eudora shut out Tonganoxie, 5-0, in the first Frontier League game of the season last week.

Tonganoxie is at home Thursday against Spring Hill and then travels east Friday to take on Blue Valley Southwest.

After that, it will be time for another tournament, as THS heads to the site of last year’s regional title. The Chieftains will compete April 10 and 12 at the Fort Scott Tournament.

Tonganoxie last competed at Fort Scott at a Class 4A regional this past May. THS won two games and clinched a state berth.
