Tonganoxie alum Goldbeck faces KU baseball with Mizzou
Former Tonganoxie High standout Gehrig Goldbeck was back in the area Tuesday night for a big rivalry game.
Goldbeck, who was one of the top junior college players in the nation during his tenure at Kansas City Community College, now plays at Missouri.
Mizzou and Kansas squared off Tuesday night after The Mirror’s print deadline.
The MU junior has started 30 games for the Tigers. He has 24 hits so far this season, four of which were doubles. He also has 8 RBI and 23 runs. Goldbeck currently is batting .264.
Missouri comes into the game 13-30 overall and 0-21 in Southeastern Conference play. KU, meanwhile, is 35-10 overall and 15-6 in Big 12 Conference play and breaking school record after school record, as the team potentially could eclipse the 1993 team that advanced to the College World Series. The Jayhawks are ranked No. 23 in the nation. Though Mizzou is winless in SEC play, the conference is arguably the toughest in the nation with six teams ranked in the Top 10 and 10 in the Top 25.
The teams will play again next week Tuesday in Columbia at Mizzou’s Taylor Stadium.
