The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team might not have had the best shooting night of the season Friday against Turner at Chieftain Arena, but THS still scored 46 points off turnovers on its way to a 56-18 victory against the Bears.

Alyssa Schoeneck scored a game-high 23 points in leading the Chieftains to victory. She went to the free-throw line often, finishing the night 7-for-9 from the charity stripe. Emerson Maslak and Jaela Herrera each had seven points for THS. Tonganoxie went just 4-for-24 from three-point land, but overall was 21-for-69 from the field.

Turner scored all of its points on three-pointers, as the Bears went 6-for-17 from behind the arc. Jerzey Hanna led the team with 15 points on five three-point shots. Iliana Lopez was the other scorer for THS with three.

Tonganoxie was dominant in the first half, as the Chieftains jumped out to a 19-3 lead after a quarter. They pretty much replicated that output in the second quarter and took a 39-6 lead into halftime. Both teams scored 12 in the third quarter as the game eventually went to a running clock because of the margin of Tonganoxie’s lead.

Friday’s victory moved Tonganoxie to 8-5 on the season, but this week’s schedule is tougher.

THS faced No. 4 Eudora (10-1) Tuesday at Chieftain Arena and then will be on the road Thursday for a makeup game at Baldwin (7-4) and then at Bonner Springs (3-9) on Friday. Tonganoxie lost to Eudora, 56-30, on Dec. 19 at EHS and defeated Bonner, 37-28, Dec. 10, at THS.

This will be the first meeting of the season against Baldwin on Thursday.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Tonganoxie was the No. 11 seed in the Class 4A East Bracket. If that were the final standings, THS would open substate at No. 6 Rock Creek (8-3), with the winner to face No. 3 Eudora or No. 14 Independence (4-8). A lot of movement can still happen within the standings, as Tonganoxie still had seven games left in the regular season heading into this week’s action.
