Tonganoxie High boys wrestling will be sending 10 to the Class 4A state championships Friday and Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. THS won its regional Saturday at Chieftain Arena.

Saturday’s finish is becoming quite the habit for the Tonganoxie High boys wrestling team.

THS captured a regional title for the fifth consecutive time Saturday when it won its home regional at Chieftain Arena.

THS will take 10 wrestlers to the Class 4A state championships, which are Friday and Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

All but one of Tonganoxie’s state qualifiers won their final match Saturday, and that particular wrestler still won silver.

Freshman Rowdey Starcher finished second after losing to one-loss sophomore Harry Langill (33-1) from Nemaha Central.

Brodie Starcher (113), Silas McCloy (132), Dax Duffett (138), Blake Riedel (144), Clayton Crookham (150) and Brady Martin (157).

Tyler Chrisp (120), Beau Underwood (126) and Emmett Crookham (165) all qualified for state by placing third.

Sebastian Perry (190) and Gavin Rhoads (285) also competed at regionals, but fell short of nabbing state berths.

Tonganoxie’s Bret Delich, who was named co-regional coach of the year after Saturday’s postseason tournament, said his squad showed up well this past weekend.

“They did a great job today,” Delich said. “Ten in. That’s awesome. They did very good by winning in placement matches. Six champions is great.”

And the results should put Tonganoxie in a good position to compete for its first state team title since 2022 when that squad won the first championship in program history.

“I thought we wrestled better than we have all year,” Delich said Saturday after the tourney inside Chieftain Arena. “That’s what you want at a regional tournament.

“We are not done yet … hopefully we can bring home another trophy.”

Tonganoxie finished as state runner-up in 2024, sixth in 2023, first in 2022 and third in 2021. The squad also placed fourth in 2020.

The Class 4A state championships are Friday and Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
