Kirchoff heading to USM, becomes 1st Tonganoxie student-athlete to sign for swimming

Tonganoxie High’s Silas Kirchoff has had a busy few days.
He competed this past weekend at the Class 5-1A boys state swimming championships.
On Tuesday, he signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in swimming at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth. The THS senior signed during a ceremony at THS.
David Bresser leads the USM men’s and women’s swim teams. Bresser took the helm at USM in 2018, a year after the men’s program was started. Bresser previously was girls coach and boys assistant coach at Lansing for five years. He was named Kansas High School Coach of the Year in 2017.
Kirchoff competed in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke at the state championships at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center. He finished the butterfly prelims in 57.67 seconds and the finals in 58.97, taking 16th overall.
He finished the backstroke in 1 minutes, 0.62 seconds and was 13th overall.
Tonganoxie swimmers compete in partnership with Piper during the regular season and then, per Kansas State High School Activities Association rules, compete unattached for Tonganoxie in the postseason.
Andover won its third consecutive 5-1A crown with 318 points, while Kapaun Mt. Carmel out of Wichita placed second with 210.
Blue Valley North won its third straight 6A title with 302, while Shawnee Mission East was runner-up with 263.
