Ottawa finishes 3rd in 4A boys state basketball

The Frontier League had a third-place finisher during state basketball weekend Saturday.

Ottawa, which came in undefeated as the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A boys state tournament, placed third after defeating Andale, 61-36, in the consolation game at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. The Cyclone finished the year 24-1. OHS lost to eventual champion McPherson, 52-50, in double overtime in the semifinals.

McPherson finished the year at 21-4 after defeating Rock Creek (22-2), 53-44, in the championship.

No. 2 Rock Creek knocked out Tonganoxie in the substate semifinals.

It ended up being quite the run for McPherson at state, as the Bullpups played a total of three overtimes.

No. 4 MHS defeated another Frontier League school in No. 5 Baldwin in the quarterfinals, 60-59, in overtime. BHS finished the season at 18-5.

On the girls side, No. 1 Wellington won a state title with a 53-48 victory in the finals against No. 6 Bishop Miege (19-5). Wellington (24-1) also defeated No. 5 Buhler (18-4) by a 46-30 score in the semifinals and No. 8 Andale (15-7) by a 52-40 score.

No. 3 Eudora was a Frontier League representative at state. Bishop Miege ended EHS’ season in the quarterfinals, 68-35. The Cardinals ended their year at 20-3.

In other boys state championships, No. 1 Shawnee Mission South (22-3) defeated No. 7 Olathe North (16-6), 63-56, in 6A at Koch Arena in Wichita, while No. 2 Kapaun Mount Carmel (22-3) outlasted No. 1 and previously undefeated Highland Park, 58-55, at Emporia’s White Auditorium in overtime in 5A. Frontier League representative Bonner Springs, the No. 6 seed, finished the season 18-5 after losing to No. 3 Andover in the quarterfinals, 76-60.

In 3A, No. 4 Hesston (24-2) defeated No. 6 Goodland (22-4), 51-46, at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, while in 2A, No. 2 Sterling (23-3) took down previously undefeated No. 1 Moundridge (25-0) by a 56-45 score at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.

Top-seeded Olpe (24-2) took home the boys title in 1A Division I at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City. The Eagles defeated No. 2 Coldwater-South Central (23-2), 47-34.

And in 1A Division II, No. 2 Axtell (25-1) took down previously undefeated No. 1 Cunningham (25-1) by a 57-39 score at Colby Event Center.

On the girls side, No. 3 Blue Valley North (21-4) took down No. 1 Derby (21-4), 65-39 in 6A in Wichita, while No. 8 St. Thomas Aquinas (18-7) dropped No. 2 and previously undefeated Topeka Seaman (24-1), 68-61. Aquinas also defeated previously unbeaten No. 1 Hays (22-1), 51-48, and Frontier League representative and No. 4 Spring Hill (20-5), 68-54, in the semifinals in Emporia. SHHS took fourth.

No. 2 Halstead (25-1) defeated No. 4 Silver Lake (23-2), 48-45, in the 3A championship in Hutchison. No. 1 Moundridge (24-2) got the 2A title in Manhattan with a 62-51 victory against Doniphan West (19-6).

No. 1 Centralia completed the lone perfect season among all classes. The Panthers finished 26-0 after defeating previously undefeated No. 2 Little River (23-1), 50-43, in the 1A-DI title game in Dodge City.

And in 1A-DII, in a battle of schools in the same school district, No. 3 Hanover (23-2) defeated No. 8 Linn (18-7), 46-35, in Colby.

The Bulldogs knocked off top-seeded South Haven (21-2) in the quarterfinals, 51-39 before facing their arch-rival in the HHS Wildcats. The Twin Valley League schools are in north central Kansas.

McPherson made its 61st state appearance on the boys side, tying the school with Wyandotte for most all-time (1912-2024).

On the boys side, Sterling prevented Moundridge from winning its third straight state title and second consecutive undefeated title, while Kapaun won its second straight 5A title. Cunningham was denied a second straight title.

On the girls side, Wellington snapped Bishop Miege’s stranglehold on 4A. Miege had won five straight and nine of the last 10. Hanover also won its second straight.
