Fisher clinches individual berth for Class 4A boys state golf tourney

Tonganoxie High senior golfer Zac Fisher, third from left, earned a state berth at a Class 4A regional Monday at Wamego.
Tonganoxie will send one of its golfers to the state tournament, but the squad missed out on a team state berth by two spots.
THS competed Monday in a Class 4A boys golf regional at Wamego.
Wamego won the meet at 20 over par, while Hayden placed second (+34) and Bishop Miege third (+57).
Rock Creek placed fourth (+58) and Tonganoxie fifth (+66).
“They had their opportunities and we couldn’t capitalize on them,” THS coach Doug Sandburg said. “We had the chance to beat Bishop Miege. You gotta capitalize and down the stretch the last three or four holes we didn’t capitalize on our opportunities.
“The opportunity went the wrong direction for us.”
Though THS didn’t get one of the top three spots for a state berth, the Chieftains will be sending an individual qualifier.
Senior Zac Fisher finished 15th overall at 13 over par.
The Top 5 golfers not on state qualifying teams (Top 3 regional teams) advance to state.
Fisher took the fifth spot and will be competing next week at the state championships Tuesday at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton.
Luke McRae placed 17th (+14), Lachlan McRae 24th (+17) and Gavin Reischman 29th (+22). Carson Heffel placed 41st (+33) and Wesley Johnson 42nd (+35).
Tonganoxie placed fifth in arguably the toughest 4A regional. Sandburg reflected on the season and noted that the team had really been rolling heading into the postseason.
“It still doesn’t erase that they had a good season,” Sandburg said. “There’s a lot of young kids developing and the outlook for the future still looks very bright.”
Fisher will finish up his THS career next week at state. Other seniors on this year’s team were Gavin Reischman, Wes Williams, Mark Geiger and Josiah Weatherford.
State will begin 9 a.m. Tuesday. The top golfers will advance to Day 2 on Wednesday, May 28.
