Fisher competes at state golf championship

Zac Fisher finished 71st after Day 1 of the Class 4A Boys State Golf Championships May 27 in Newton.
The Tonganoxie High senior was 21 over par after 18 holes.
Fisher’s finish wasn’t high enough to advance him to Day 2 of this year’s tournament.
Independence’s Ethan Small led the field after Day 1 at 3 under par, but finished as state runner-up Wednesday at 1 over par.
Pratt’s Grant McAtee won the individual title after finishing even after 18 holes on Day 2. It was a big jump after finishing 11th at 7 over par after the first 18 holes on Day 1.
Wamego won the team title Wednesday, May 28, after finishing 20 over par. WHS won its third straight state title after finishing with a low score of 621. Hayden was second with 649 and Towanda-Circle third with a 655.
Shawnee Mission East won the 6A title, while St. James Academy won the 5A crown. Wichita Collegiate won 3A, Sacred Heart of Salina won 2A and Central Christian of Hutchinson took 1A. Downs-Lakeside won this year’s sand greens title.
Sacred Heart has won six straight 2A titles, while Downs-Lakeside has now captured five straight team titles.
