Tonganoxie High’s Paityn Van Middlesworth gets ready to tee off Monday during a Class 4A regional at Fort Scott. Van Middlesworth tied for 10th, which helped her qualify for state as an individual. The 4A state championships are next Monday and Tuesday at Hesston Golf Course in Hesston.

Paityn Van Middlesworth is headed back to state. The Tonganoxie High junior placed 11th at Monday’s Class 4A substate at Brookridge Country Club in Overland Park.

Tonganoxie placed fifth as a team at the substate. THS finished with a score of 437. Augusta won the team title with a tiebreaker and a low score of 360, as Baldwin also scored 360 for second. Eudora placed third (365) and Anderson County fourth (424). Bishop Miege, the host of the tournament, placed sixth with a 457.

Baldwin’s Peyton Wright won the individual title with a 75. Eudora’s Marleigh Grant finished second with a 79 and Ottawa’s Kathy Gillett third with an 82.

Wellington won the Chanute substate and McPherson took the crown at the Butler substate title.

Van Middlesworth, a junior, now will prepare for the 4A state championships this coming Monday at Carey Park in Hutchinson. It will be her second state appearance after qualifying last year as a sophomore.

Day 1 of the championships start at 9 a.m. Monday. Teams and individuals advancing to Day 2 will start at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

THS coach Doug Sandburg commended Van Middlesworth for her 11th-place finish at substate and is ready for the week of preparation heading into state.

“It’s going to be a pretty tough field and she’s going to have to play well to make it to the second day,” Sandburg said.

Tonganoxie’s lone senior, Julia Staples placed 21st and just missed a state berth by a couple spots.

THS had five freshmen on this year’s squad and three sophomores, so the team is laying the foundation for the coming years. And, the team will have its two-time state qualifier back as a senior in Van Middlesworth.

Teamwise this year, were a very young team,” Sandburg said.
