Tonganoxie volleyball falls to Mustangs in substate finals

Tonganoxie High got its rematch Saturday at a Class 4A substate at Rock Creek, but THS wasn’t quite able to knock off the host school for a second time this season.
No. 10 THS defeated No. 7 Santa Fe Trail, 25-23, 25-21, in its East Bracket substate semifinal. That set up a title tilt between the Chieftains and Mustangs. Rock Creek, the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 15 Baldwin, 25-12, 25-7, in the other semifinal match. Baldwin advanced after defeating No. 18 Coffeyville, 25-12, 25-14, in a play-in match.
In Set 1 of the finals match, Rock Creek got the commanding 25-15 victory. Tonganoxie got closer in Set 2, but RCHS was able to pull off the sweep with a 25-20 win.
With the victory, Rock Creek advances to state with a 32-6 record.
Tonganoxie ended its season at 19-18 as substate runner-up.
Santa Fe Trail finished the year at 26-13, Baldwin at 9-24 and Coffeyville 3-26.
Rock Creek will be the No. 4 seed this weekend in the 4A state tournament at Hutchinson Sports Arena.
Andale is the top seed at 31-1, while Clay Center is 38-2 as the No. 2 seed. McPherson (34-5) is the No. 3 seed.
The Frontier League has a 4A representative, as Paola is the No. 5 seed at 26-8. Hayden is No. 6 (29-9), Buhler is No. 7 (15-22) and Bishop Miege is the No. 8 seed (9-26).
Pool play is Friday, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to Saturday.
Pool A is No. 1 Andale, No. 4 Rock Creek, No. 5 Paola and No. 8 Bishop Miege. Pool B is No. 2 Clay Center, No. 3 McPherson, No. 6 Hayden and No. 7 Buhler.
Bishop Miege has won the last three state titles.
