Tonganoxie boys soccer falls in overtime at KC Christian in season opener Friday
Tonganoxie High boys soccer team opened the season with an overtime thriller Friday, but the nonconference clash had a heartbreaking ending.
Playing at Kansas City Christian on Friday in Prairie Village, THS scored late in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into intermission. KCC responded early in the second half with an equalizer, but the teams would need overtime to decide a winner.
The teams battled back and forth, but with just about 80 seconds left in overtime, Tonganoxie was whistled for a penalty in the box and the Panthers received a free kick. KCC connected on the ensuing kick and came away with the victory. Kansas City Christian improved to 1-0 on the season, while Tonganoxie fell to 0-1.
THS was back in action Tuesday at Maranatha in a match that took place after The Mirror’s print deadline. Tonganoxie will have its home opener Thursday against Lansing and will be home again this coming Tuesday against Spring Hill as the Chieftains jump into Frontier League play.
