The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team capped its Senior Night with nice ending to the regular season — a big victory over a talented Ottawa team that THS dropped two tight games to earlier in the year.

Tonganoxie put up 18 points in the first quarter and went into the locker room with its biggest lead, a 13-point advantage at 36-23.

Ottawa would cut into the lead in the second half, outscoring Tonganoxie in both the third and fourth quarters. But THS would hold on for the 56-50 victory. THS improved to 15-8 on the season, while Ottawa moved to 16-6.

Alyssa Schoeneck led THS with 23 points. Addy Schooler and Jaela Herrera also were in double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Also scoring for the Chieftains were Adlen Johnson with 5 and Kaylin Wiehe.

Seniors Schoeneck, Herrera and Kalea Baldock all were honored before Tuesday’s game at Chieftain Arena. The game was the final contest of the night for the second time this season.

Ottawa’s Leah Askins-Dietrich led all scorers with 29 points.

THS had five three-pointers on the night. Herrera had three of them, while Johnson and Schoeneck each had one.

Tonganoxie currently is the No. 9 seed in the Class 4A East Bracket. Fort Scott is the No. 8 seed and has its regular-season finale Friday at home. FSHS lost to Independence, 57-46, on Jan. 30 on the road.

If Tonganoxie and Fort Scott face off in the substate semifinals, it would be a rematch of a Feb. 13 game in Fort Scott. THS won that game, 50-40.
