The Tonganoxie-Eudora girls basketball game was doozy into the third quarter Friday at Chieftain Arena.

In a battle of ranked Class 4A teams, the two squads traded leads throughout much of the first quarter. Tonganoxie led, 14-12, after the first quarter and looked to have the lead as well heading into intermission.

THS held a 20-19 lead in the final moments of the second quarter, but Eudora’s Brynn Deterding was fouled on a desperation three-pointer right before halftime. Deterding proceeded to sink all three free throws and took a 22-20 lead into halftime.

The teams traded leads through a portion of the third quarter, but Eudora started to get hot and built a 42-29 lead heading into the final quarter thanks in large part to an 11-0 run.

Tonganoxie just wasn’t able to cut into the lead and eventually fell 52-41.

THS had its share of success, including Jaela Herrera getting nine first-half points, all on three-pointers.

Though the Chieftains had long-range success, the Cardinals locked down the lane. EHS outrebounded THS and outscored Tonganoxie, 10-2, in the paint.

Like Tonganoxie, Eudora placed second in an early season tournament.

The Cardinals suffered a loss in the Flurry on Flush Tournament championship against Silver Lake at Rock Creek. The Eagles cruised to a 72-44 victory, but the Cardinals were able to bounce back against the Chieftains on Friday at Chieftain Arena.

Eudora moved to 5-1 on the season, while Tonganoxie dropped to 4-2.

The squads are guaranteed to meet at least once more this season. The Frontier League foes will square off again in roughly a month at Eudora, but the teams could meet earlier in the Tonganoxie Invitational Tournament and at the end of the season if both teams are in the same substate.

THS was back in action Tuesday at home against Baldwin (3-3) after The Mirror’s print deadline.

Tonganoxie also has a rematch of the Roundball Classic finals this Friday with a road game at Ottawa. The Cyclones were 6-0 heading into play this week. OHS won the tournament title in Garden City with a 60-55 victory against Tonganoxie.

Eudora boys complete sweep

The Eudora boys team built a 23-11 lead heading into the second quarter, but Tonganoxie would rally. THS went on an 8-0 run in the second quarter but the Cards answered with a 14-0 run and eventually heading into halftime with a 39-22 lead. THS did cut the lead to 10 in the fourth quarter, but Eudora would go on to win, 80-63. EHS moved to 2-4, while THS fell to 1-5 and played Baldwin after The Mirror’s print deadline Tuesday.
