Tonganoxie and St. James Academy battle during the championship game of the Tonganoxie Invitational on Friday at THS.The winter weather didn’t do organizers of midseason tournaments any favors.
Both the Tonganoxie and McLouth invitationals were condensed so that games could finish up before Saturday.
For Tonganoxie, the games were played in two days instead of three, with most teams playing two games Friday. Liberal wasn’t able to play in the tournament due to the anticipated inclement weather and the long drive from southwest Kansas. Legacy Prep filled in for Liberal on the boys side to ensure an eight-team field would still play. A replacement team couldn’t be found for the girls, so that bracket continued on with seven teams.
The Tonganoxie High girls advanced to the championship game of this year’s tournament. The Chieftains opened the tournament with a 50-41 victory against Leavenworth and then advanced to Friday’s semifinals. THS rolled by Olathe East, 56-38, in a noon game that advanced Tonganoxie to the finals against St. James Academy. SJA defeated Eudora, 56-47, in the other semifinal. Tonganoxie and St. James battled through an exciting first half. In the second half, the Thunder was able to get some separation and eventually won, 56-40.
Tonganoxie finished with the second-place plaque and moved to 9-5 on the season.
Eudora defeated Olathe East for third and Piper defeated Leavenworth for fifth place.
On the boys side, Tonganoxie was able to get a victory Friday with a 71-39 win in the seventh-place game against Schlagle. Tonganoxie lost to Leavenworth, 73-43, in the quarterfinals and they lost a heartbreaker to Wichita North, 52-50, in the consolation bracket.
Atchison won this year’s boys tournament. The Phoenix, which were the No. 1 seed, defeated Wichita North, 78-32, in the quarterfinals and then Leavenworth, 73-66, in the semifinals. Atchison pulled away late against Eudora for a 74-64 win in the championship. Leavenworth defeated Metro Academy in the third-place game and Wichita North got by Legacy Prep in the fifth-place game.
