Tonganoxie’s Wyatt Bennett takes 29th at clay target nationals

Wyatt bennett displays his accomplishments at the Clay Target League Nationals this past weekend in Mason, Michigan.Wyatt Bennett finished off his high school career as one of the top trap shooters in the country for the second year in a row.
And this time, he ended nationals in an even more exclusive group — Top 30 in the U.S.
Bennett competed July 11-12 at the Clay Target League National Championship in Mason, Michigan. After competing last year at nationals, he was joined this year by fellow Tonganoxie High team members Gavin Eastburn and Lennon Bennett.

Wyatt Bennett put up a score of 99 out of a possible 100 in the finals Sunday with a reverse run of 68. After all competitors finished up, he placed 29th in the nation after taking 62nd last year. Overall, 16 youths shot a perfect 100. Wyatt was one of 32 who shot a 99.
The Top 400 advanced to finals on Day 2. On Saturday there were 1,800 shooters who were vying for a spot in the finals.
Lennon shot a 69/100 and placed 1,728th, while Eastburn shot a 87/100 and placed 1,274th. Wyatt shot a 97/100 and placed 201st Saturday and then finished up his THS career after three seasons in the sport.
The national tournament performances capped off a spring season that saw the THS trap shoot team take 13th out of 85 teams at state in Sedgwick.
Wyatt Bennett placed 43rd with a score of 95 and a reverse run of 27, Brody Freeman nabbed 47th with a score of 95 with a reverse run of 25. Ava Barker finished 105th with a score of 91 and Jackson Barker placed 198th with a score of 86. Other state varsity placers were Jonah Topliff, 273rd (81); Lennon Bennett, 346th (73); and Lilly Topliff, 363rd (64). Wyatt Bennett, Freeman and Jackson Barker all received perfect 25/25 state patches.
There also was a state junior varsity competition.
Parker White placed eighth with a score of 91, Jack Duncan 44th with a score of 86. Ellie Howlett 97th with a score of 81 and Payton Porta 151st with a score of 76.
Others placing for Tonganoxie were Sarah Meyer, 193rd (73); Liam Baker, 234th (65); and Ava Anderson, 272nd (54).
The junior varsity team places sixth with a score of 407/500. White also received a perfect 25/25 state patch.
The postseason accomplishments followed Tonganoxie’s first conference title in trap shooting.
