Tonganoxie girls basketball draws rematch for substate
The Tonganoxie High girls basketball teams drew a No. 9 seed for this year’s postseason.
THS entered a Class 4A Substate No. 1 with a 15-8 record. The Chieftains visited the No. 8 Fort Scott Tigers (15-7) Tuesday after The Mirror’s print deadline.
Tonganoxie just missed out on hosting a substate game, but FSHS finished a half-game ahead of THS in the East Bracket standings. The two teams played earlier this season in Fort Scott where Tonganoxie prevailed, 50-40, on Feb. 13. That game originally was scheduled to be played in Tonganoxie, but it switched to Fort Scott due to Tonganoxie hosting a girls wrestling super regional. That game will take place in Tonganoxie next year.
If the Chieftains advanced to the semifinals, the squad would take on either No. 1 Rock Creek (20-3) or No. 16 Parsons (6-17) at 6 p.m. Friday in the substate championship. The higher seed will host the finals.
Substate champions will advance to the state quarterfinals the following week, but the Kansas State High School Activities Association is changing the format slightly this year. Neutral quarterfinal sites will be determined based on the distance between the schools. Potential sites are United Wireless Arena in Dodge City, Tony’s Pizza Events Center and Kansas Wesleyan’s Mabee Center in Salina, Wichita State University’s Koch Arena and Friends University’s Garvey Center in Wichita, White Auditorium in Emporia and Kansas City Kansas Community College Fieldhouse in KCKCCC. The semifinals, third-place and championship rounds will then be played at Hutchinson Sports Arena for 4A. That also will be the site for 3A. Meanwhile, 6A and 5A will take place at Koch Arena in Wichita. The 2A games will take place at Emporia’s White Auditorium, as will 1A Division II. The 1A D-I games will be at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City.
