Tonganoxie High girls basketball advances to substate finals

Tonganoxie basketballTonganoxie High is headed to a Class 4A substate championship.
The No. 9 THS girls basketball team outlasted No. 8 Fort Scott, 48-35, Tuesday in the substate quarterfinals.Tonganoxie was able to avoid a revenge game from the Tigers at FSHS. The Chieftains won the regular-season matchup last month and followed up with the postseason victory Tuesday.
Tonganoxie opened with an 8-0 run, but Fort Scott roared back and THS had just a 10-8 lead after a quarter.
Each team went on runs before halftime when THS held on to a 21-16 lead. Tonganoxie got up, 29-19, but Fort Scott had an answer for that run as well. The Tigers got hot as the third quarter progressed and trailed just 31-29 heading into the final quarter. But Tonganoxie would hold FSHS to just 6 points in the final stanza and the Chieftains eventually got the double-digit victory.
Alyssa Schoeneck led THS with a game-high 21 points.
Tonganoxie’s postseason victory was the team’s first since 2012 when the program last advanced to state.
No. 9 THS (16-8) will take on No. 1 Rock Creek (21-3) in the 4A Substate No. 1 finals at 6 p.m. Friday at RCHS.
Rock Creek defeated No. 16 Parsons, 71-23, on Tuesday at Rock Creek. PHS finished the season 6-18.
Other 4A East Bracket substate championship matchups will be No. 2 Wamego (20-3) vs. No. 10 Bishop Miege (16-8), No. 3 Eudora (20-3) vs. No. 6 Ottawa (17-7), No. 13 Baldwin (11-13) vs. No. 5 Hayden (18-6).
West Bracket matchups are No. 1 Wellington (21-1) vs. No. 9 Buhler (12-12), No. 4 Chapman (15-9) vs. No. 5 Mulvane (15-9), No. 15 Augusta (6-18) vs. No. 7 Concordia (13-9) and No. 3 Andale vs. No. 6 Hugoton (14-9) or No. 11 El Dorado (8-15).
