Tonganoxie grad Sonntag competes at NAIA wrestling championships

Cleary University is an NAIA school in Howell, Mich.

Tonganoxie High graduate Grayson Sonntag went 2-2 at the NAIA National Championshps this weekend near Wichita.

Sonntag wrestles for Cleary (Michigan) and was the No. 10 seed in the 149-pound division at Heartland Credit Union Arena in Park City. The THS alum reached the championship quarterfinals with 2 victories before losing to the No. 2 seed Elijah Larsen from Grand View (Iowa).Larsen went on to win the 149 championship.

Sonntag defeated Friends’ Brady Duling by major decision, 11-1, before upsetting No. 7 Nikolas Slatoff from Baker by decision, 6-1. Sonntag had a chance to advance in the consolation bracket, but Cornerstone (Michigan) Cole Karasinski wrestler eliminated him, 10-7.

Grand View also won the team title Saturday. The Garners won their fifth straight national title and 14th in the last 15 years.

Sonntag assembled a decorated career at Tonganoxie. He was a four-time state medalist at THS from 2019-22. He won a state title as a sophomore, finished third as a freshman and junior and was runner-up as a senior.
