Tonganoxie High School, home of the Chieftains

Tonganoxie High baseball was the first THS team to get the schedule started among spring sports this season.

THS competed during the weekend at the Jerry Helm Air Capital Classic.

Tonganoxie won its season opener Saturday against Trinity Academy at Maize, but lost the second game against Augusta in Augusta.

Tonganoxie was down, 2-0, to Trinity, heading into the bottom of the third, but the Chieftains answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Trinity would eventually make it 4-3, but THS answered again and held on for the victory.

Roy Rush and Everett Holland each had a home run for Tonganoxie. Jacob Morenz went 3-for-4 for the Chieftains.

Merek Davenport went 6 1/3 innings. He gave up 3 runs, 2 of which were earned. He also struck out 11 Trinity batters.

In the second game, Tonganoxie scored 6 runs in an inning, but couldn’t keep up with Augusta in the slugfest. The Orioles won, 19-8.

Augusta broke out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and had a 4-1 lead after two innings. THS would score 6 in the next inning and take a 7-4 lead, but Augusta scored in every inning and the Chieftains weren’t able to answer with enough runs.

Evan Beal connected for a double and a triple against Augusta and had 3 RBI total.

The Chieftains were on the road Tuesday at Eudora in a game that took place after The Mirror’s print deadline. THS again will be on the road for a tournament this weekend at Sabetha.
