The Tonganoxie USD 464 school board approved girls golf as the district's newest high school offering. The team's inaugural season is this fall, with THS boys golf coach Doug Sandburg also leading the girls team.

Tonganoxie placed eighth at Wednesday’s Basehor-Linwood Invitational at Falcon Lakes Golf Club.

THS finished the day with shooting 392 as a team. Wamego won the meet with a low score of 335, with Basehor-Linwood second with 362 and De Soto third with 366. Jeff West took fourth (369), Spring Hill fish (376), Eudora sixth (377) and Hayden seventh (388). Tonganoxie was four strokes behind Hayden for eighth. Piper was one behind THS in ninth (393) and Ottawa rounded out the top 10 with a 442. Bonner Springs (459) and Leavenworth (495) also fielded full teams.

Tonganoxie’s Paityn Van Middlesworth led the way for the Chieftains with a 88. She tied Ottawa’s Ella Sherpy for 13th.

Solara Garcia tied for 23rd (96) with Piper’s Rylee Burke, while May Stephens tied for 30th (100) with Spring Hill’s Lydia Herthel. Madison Leffert tied for 47th (108) with Bonner Springs’ Jaylin Armendariz and Macey Copher. And Audrey Wensel (113) tied for 56th with Bonner Springs’ Brooklyn McCormick.

The Basehor-Linwood meet marked the final regular-season invitational, as substate is Monday for Kansas high school teams.

Brush Creek Golf Course in Columbus will be the site for Tonganoxie’s Class 4A substate. The meet will begin at 9 a.m.

Other teams at the substate are Baldwin, Bishop Miege, Columbus, Eudora, Fort Scott, Frontenac, Louisburg and Paola.
