Senior Paityn Van Middlesworth won the individual title after a three-way scorecard playoff. Van Middlesworth shot a low score of 41 at the nine-hole tourney alongside Eudora’s Brooklynn Akers and Basehor-Linwood’s Aubrey Ziolo. With the scorecard playoff, the three golfers’ scores are compared on the toughest-rated holes on the course. Van Middlesworth had the best rating and was named the champion in a tough field. Eudora’s Henley Kueffer was a stroke behind in fourth (42) and Anderson County’s Everlee Crum fifth (43).

May Stephens tied for 12th with a 50 and Audrey Wensel 20th with a 56 for THS. Solara Garcia was right behind in 21st with a 56 for the Chieftains.

Tonganoxie placed fourth as a team out of nine squads with a 204.

Eudora won the meet with a 176, Anderson County was second with a 188 and Basehor-Linwood third with a 204.

THS coach Doug Sandburg said Van Middlesworth got off to a great start with her individual title and saw some promising play from other team members.

“I feel like the other girls are starting to tractice a lot better,” Sandburg said. “First-tournament jitters will get some of that stuff out, get us to improve.”

Next up for Tonganoxie is the Wamego Invitational on Thursday at the Wamego Country Club. The loaded field will be Buhler, Clay Center, Concordia, Holton, Marysville, Nemaha Central, Ottawa, Rock Creek, Rossville, Silver Lake and Wamego.

The host Red Raiders are ranked No 10 in the latest Kansas Golf Coaches Association rankings for Class 4A.

“Wamego is a really good course and a really tough course,” Sandburg said. “It will be a good test and a good barometer. Wamego has been the gold standard in 4A. It’s a big test for us. We’ll see.”

Tonagnoxie lost just won senior from last year’s squad in Julia Staples. This year’s seniors are Van Middlesworth and Emily Wehmeyer.

“I think this group has a chance to be really good if they keep working hard and do what they need to do,” Sandburg said. “W have a lot of juniors and a lot of young kids going into the program with five or six freshmen.”

Tonganoxie has been practicing often inside due to the early season heat wave, but the team will be getting on the course, even if it requires a later tee time.

“You can’t play golf without getting out on the course,” Sandburg said. “Wednesday we definitely are going to have to get on the course.”

Sandburg said it’s possible the Wamego meet will be moved up from 1 p.m. to take advantage of lower temperatures.

Next week, the team will be at the Spring Hill Invitational at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course. The meet is set to start at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Other teams there will be Baldwin, Gardner-Edgerton, Truner, Piper, Paola, Pittsburg, De Soto, Ottawa, Spring Hill and Bonner Springs.
