KSHSAA 26-27 classifications announced

Kansas State High School Activities Association

The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced classifications for the 2026-27 school year and 14 schools moved from different classes in 2025-26.

Tonganoxie is the eighth-largest school in Class 4A with 564 students. General classifications covers enrollment in grades 9-12 and determine school class levels in all activities besides football.

McLouth is the No. 17 in enrollment in 2A (148).

Schools range in size as follows: 6A, 2,363-1,228; 5A, 1,227-752; 4A 702-298; 3A, 298-164; 2A, 162-102; and 1A, 102-16.

There are 36 teams each in classes 6A-4A, 64 each in 3A and 2A and 112 in 1A.

Schools changing classes this school year are Harmon in 6A (from 5A), Wichita West in 5A (from 6A) and Central Heights, Hillsboro and Syracuse in 3A (all from 2A). Jayhawk-Linn, Oskaloosa and Phillipsburg moved to 2A from 3A and Clifton-Clyde, Olpe and Wabaunsee moved to 2A from 1A.

Northern Heights, Rawlins County and Udall all moved to 1A from 2A.

Postseason substates and regionals also have been announced.

THS cross country will have 4A substate at the Baldwin Golf Course, while McLouth will compete in a 2A substate at the Wabaunsee County Fairgronds in Alma.

Girls golf substate sites also have been announced, but team assignments haven’t yet been posted to the KSHSAA site. The four substates in 4A are Buhler (in Hutchinson), Columbus, Coffeyville and Wellington. The Mirror will update where Tonganoxie is headed when assignments are made available at kshsaa.org.
