Sunflowers start to open up to the world Monday afternoon at Grinter Farms south of Tonganoxie. The annual attraction likely soon will be flooded with picture-taking visitors as people near and far come out to get their photos of the state flower in all its glory. The sunflowers are near 204050 Stillwell Road to the west of U.S. Highway 24-40.

Sunflower time is here again.

Grinter Farms sunflower fields are starting to pop with sunflowers opening up for their fans.

The fields, just a few miles south of Tonganoxie near 204050 Stillwell Road off U.S. Highway 24-40.

The sunflowers have been known to attract visitors locally, globally and everywhere in between.

Labor Day Weekend normally is when the most crowd descend upon the fields for family, engagement and baby photos, to name a few.

Ted and Kris Grinter have stations where folks can give free-will donations to help offset some costs each year. There also is the Sunflower General store nearby that the family has operated the last few years. It features soaps, crafts and chinammon rolls, to name a few items.

Per the Grinter Farms Facebook page, Kris recommends morning visits during the week, as they are usually less crowded times.

Visitors should know that there are no public restrooms at the fields, so motorists should act accordingly.

There normally is a two-week window for the fields to be in photogenic form, but anyone wanting to visit should check out the “Rules of Engagement” on the Facebook page, which also include some light-hearted entries.

“Although we considered planting the field in our climate-controlled superdome this year, we opted for outside in nature,” the post reads. “This means it will be hot and buggy. Honeybees are a given and are our friends. We go to great lengths to protect them.

“They are not at all interested in stinging you as they are just busy doing their jobs. There will be bugs!!!”
