Tonganoxie FCCLA offers mental health and suicide prevention information at football game
The Tonganoxie Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter is working to raise awareness for mental health improvement and suicide prevention.
Tonganoxie High School FCCLA members were on hand at Friday’s THS football game against Basehor-Linwood to raise awareness. They also invited the BLHS chapter to join with them. This marked the second year the chapters offered information at the football game. Last year, BLHS FCCLA organized the event with the game being in Basehor and invited THS FCCLA members. With the game being at Tonganoxie this year, THS FCCLA spearheaded the event.
FCCLA’s national program of Student Body helps members learn to make informed, responsible choices for their physical and mental health while also providing opportunities to teach others.
According to Heather DeMaranville, one of Tonganoxie’s FCCLA advisers, the organization understands the importance of breaking the stigmas that surround both mental illness and suicide. With the recent change in the suicide and crisis hotline to 988, they wanted to make sure the community is aware of the importance of talking about this topic and also aware of the new hotline number.
