Tonganoxie City Council Chambers are moving to the former public library at Third and Bury streets. In-person meetings also available for viewing on a city YouTube Channel could start with the Jan. 19 regular meeting.

A military show received approval during Monday’s Tonganoxie City Council meeting, but council members want area residents to be aware of the event due to potential noise and nature of the event.

The council approved a special event permit and public fireworks display permit for a Military Vehicle Show and World War II re-enactment event June 22 at VFW Park and a neighboring lot.

Tonganoxie school district Superintendent Loren Feldkamp, who himself is a World War II re-enactor, spoke to the council about the proposed event, which he said similar to the Heartland Military Days hosted by the Kansas National Guard Museum in Topeka each June.

Tonganoxie city ordinances that best covered the re-enactment event was the public fireworks permit.

Andy Burke with the Tonganoxie VFW said the VFW’s annual car show is a big success each summer, but the event attracts some military vehicles and it’s the local post’s hope that it can have a military vehicle-specific show that could coincide with the re-enactment.

Burke told the council the event also is being organized in honor of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, which took place June 6, 1944 and marked the Allied invasion of the Normandy region in northern France against Nazi Germany forces. The Nazis were occupying France at the time.

Council member voiced concerns about letting neighbors in that area know about the event in advance. City staff will notify residents of the planned event.

There will be demonstrations that day at 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and then 1 p.m.,1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. that day, with the event open to the public at 9 a.m. Festivities will conclude at 5 p.m.

The special permits were approved, 4-0, with Jennifer McCutchen absent.

Council approves municipal court judge, city attorney renewals

Tonganoxie’s municipal court judge and city attorney will continue their respective posts for another year.

The council approved, 4-0, renewed appointments of municipal court judge Kenneth Moore and city attorney Anna Krstulic.

The city pays Moore $800 per month for court services, while the city’s agreement with Krstulic is $4,200 monthly for attorney services. No change in fees is anticipated with the renewals.

Agreement with Tongie Tidal Waves for water park usage OK’d

The Tongie Tidal Waves swim team will utilize Tonganoxie Water Park for a portion of this summer, as it has done the past several years.

Council members approved the temporary use lease agreement for May 28-June 28.

In addition to practices at the site, the Tidal Waves will host meets that attract swimmers from other area communities. Normally the Tidal Waves have three home meets. Gretchen Meitler, one of the team’s organizers, represented the group at Monday’s meeting and said the team was working to finalize the schedule.

The lease is similar to previous years’ agreements, with a slight increase of $1 per hour (up to $15) to cover increased staffing costs during rental periods.

Council meets in executive session for 40 minutes

Members had closed-door sessions totaling 40 minutes Monday night to discuss attorney-client privilege and security measures. City Attorney Anna Krstulic, City Manager George Brajkovic and Assistant City Manager Dan Porter also met with the council in executive session.

No binding action took place and the court didn’t vote on anything following the session.
