Tonganoxie Community Historical Society’s Fourth Tuesday Program will take a closer look at a World War II POW camp near Concordia.

This month’s program will be 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the historical museum site. The event opens with a brief business meeting and then the historical program.

Historian and author Lowell May will present a program on the Camp Concordia POW Camp, which was the largest World War II POW camp in Kansas. It held between 4,000 and 8,000 prisoners, most of whom were German soldiers. The presentation will focus on the selection of Concordia for the camp, the work the prisoners did, how the camp was run according to the Geneva Convention and the closing of the camp at the end of the war.

Lowell served in the Army for 26 years, including a tour in Vietnam. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, Wichita State University and Kansas State University. He is author of “Camp Concordia, Duty Bound” and co-author of “Prisoners of War in Kansas-1943-1946.”

First State Bank and Trust is sponsoring this program.

All are welcome for this free program. Refreshments will be served following the program.

The Tonganoxie Community Historical Society site and museum is at 201 W. Washington St.
