Summer Planner 2024: Friends of Library run, VFW Car Show slated for Saturday
The Friends of the Tonganoxie Public Library Run is in its 34th year and will be returning to its summer slot this weekend.
Last year, the run, which is the Friends of the Library’s largest fundraiser of the year, moved to September, but has moved back to is traditional June timing this year.
The 5K and 10K races will be 8 a.m. Saturday at the library, 217 E. Fourth St.
Walkers also are welcome at the annual fun run.

Organizers will be getting things ready starting at 6 a.m. Saturday.
Folks can still register 5-8 p.m. Friday at the library or starting at 6 a.m. Saturday.
Organizers still are accepting volunteers to help along the route. They can leave their contact information at the library.
Those participating in the run can head over to VFW Park for this year’s VFW Car Show.
The car show once again will kick off the second Saturday in June with festivities beginning Saturday morning at the park, 900 E. First St.
Movie Night June 14
Tonganoxie Public Library’s inaugural Movie Night was supposed to be this past Friday, but inclement weather forced the cancellation of the viewing of “Wonka.”
It won’t be rescheduled, but the next Movie Night will be 7 p.m. June 14 with the showing of “National Treasure” near the library, 217 E. Fourth St.
Popcorn and water will be served up for free, but families are welcome to bring their own refreshments as well.
TRC Summer Kickoff
Tonganoxie Recreation Commission will have its annual summer kickoff party 3-6 p.m. June 15 at Chieftain Park.
Amenities this year are inflatable bounce house and Disco Dome, a giant bubble cannon and more. Vouchers for free Dole Whip or cotton candy also will be handed out.
Military Vehicle Show and D-Day Encampment Reenactment
The inaugural Tonganoxie VFW Military Vehicle Show and D-Day Encampment Reenactment will be coming to the VFW Park area later this month.
Events are set for the afternoon of June 21 and all day June 22.
Those with military vehicles and members of World War II re-enacting units will be setting up camps on June 21.
Festivities will then start at 7:30 a.m. June 22, with demonstrations to start at 10 a.m.
Different demonstrations will take place at 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.
The event will run through 5 p.m. It’s similar to the Heartland Military Days hosted by the Kansas National Guard Museum.
