A new mural greets visitors who enter the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission Activity Center gymnasium through its main downstairs entrance. TRC expanded its hours of operations a couple weeks ago and staff look to continue to add more offerings.

It’s Movie Night, Take 2 for Tonganoxie Public Library.

The library’s inaugural Movie Night was supposed to be a couple weeks ago, but inclement weather forced the cancellation of the viewing of “Wonka.”

It won’t be rescheduled, but the next Movie Night will be 7 p.m. Friday with the showing of “National Treasure” near the library, 217 E. Fourth St.

Popcorn and water will be served up for free, but families are welcome to bring their own refreshments as well.

This also is the weekend for Tonganoxie Recreation Commission’s annual Summer Kickoff Party.

TRC will have its annual summer kickoff party 3-6 p.m. Saturday at Chieftain Park. Amenities this year are inflatable bounce house and Disco Dome, a giant bubble cannon and more. Vouchers for free Dole Whip or cotton candy also will be handed out.

Updates and more about the event can be found on the TRC Facebook page.

Military Vehicle Show and D-Day Encampment Reenactment

The inaugural Tonganoxie VFW Military Vehicle Show and D-Day Encampment Reenactment will be coming to the VFW Park soon.

Events are set for the afternoon of June 21 and all day June 22.

Those with military vehicles and members of World War II re-enacting units will be setting up camps on June 21.

Festivities will then start at 7:30 a.m. June 22, with demonstrations to start at 10 a.m.

Different demonstrations will take place at 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.

The event will run through 5 p.m. It’s similar to the Heartland Military Days hosted by the Kansas National Guard Museum.

The event also is taking place to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The invasion of Normandy took place June 6, 1944.

Tonganoxie schools Superintendent Loren Feldkamp is an avid military re-enactor and is working with the VFW for the special event.

VFW’s Andy Burke said the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs mobile help bus will be there to answer questions about veterans benefits. A representative from the Veterans Administration also will be on hand to answer questions.

The encampment will take place in the low-lying area of land to the west VFW Park across the creek. Overflow parking for the water park is south of there.
