Outdoor movie night for families

The Tonganoxie Public Library is hosting several outdoor movie nights as part of its Summer Reading program.

The first feature film is “Wonka” and will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Popcorn and water will be provided, but guests may bring additional snacks as desired. Upcoming movies include “National Treasure” on June 14, “Migration” on June 28 and “E.T.” on July 12.

Inside the UK’s Deadliest Garden

We’re taking a virtual journey via Zoom into the infamous Poison Garden inside the very unique and contemporary Alnwick Garden in Northumberland, England, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Alnwick Garden was created by the Duchess of Northumberland in 2001 and while there are many fascinating sections, the Poison Garden just might be the most unique.

It contains about 100 different varieties of “toxic, intoxicating, and narcotic” plants. No one who visits the garden is allowed to smell, taste or touch any of the plants (though some people have fainted!). The Poison Garden is protected by large black iron gates, and the only access is on a guided tour. Through our Zoom program, we’re being allowed exclusive access behind the gates with one of the official gardeners who will provide a tour and give us an inside look into this dangerous garden.

Those interested should email Kim at kimd@tonganoxielibrary.org to receive the Zoom link.

Kansas City Zoo visiting the library

We’re so excited to have the Kansas City Zoo coming to the library, we have two sessions on the same day!

The Zoo will be visiting with their Zoomobile at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. June 6. They’ll be doing a program called “Adapt to That!” and participants will investigate the similarities and differences in living creatures around the world.

You’ll observe, compare and contrast live animal ambassadors and animal biofacts to explore adaptations and habitats. Registration is required to attend due to space limitations. Those who are interested can register online at tinyurl.com/mpbak8t4.
