Man sentenced to more than 2 years for shooting incident outside Leavenworth bar
A man who opened fire on a woman and her two friends as they left a Leavenworth bar after celebrating her birthday has been sentenced to more than two years in the Kansas Department of Corrections.
During a sentencing hearing Wednesday, Nov. 6, Cortney L. Roberson, 41, Leavenworth was sentenced to 25 months in prison.
Following a two-day trial, on Aug. 27, 2024, a jury found Roberson guilty of two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of criminal threat and one count each of criminal discharge of a firearm, and criminal damage of property, according to a release from the office of Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
According to court documents, the victims were leaving a downtown Leavenworth bar on March 8. Moments later, Roberson approached the front of their vehicle with a handgun in his right hand. Feeling threatened, the victim quickly drove away, during which a gunshot was heard. Shortly after the incident, Roberson made a threatening call to the victim. As the victims fled the area, they contacted 911 and drove to the Leavenworth Criminal Justice Center for help. While the victims were being interviewed by police at the Justice Center, Roberson sent threatening texts to one of the other victims.
Roberson was arrested on March 12 and charged on March 13.
“Testifying against an attacker is never easy and requires great courage,” Thompson said. “This victim showed incredible strength in testifying about what happened to her. This crime was reckless, unnecessary, and could have seriously hurt someone.”
