The gymnasium at the TRC Activity Center is used for various programs and activities. The gym floor is going to be replaced and will be off limits for 4-8 weeks this summer. The warmer weather is bringing green grass and blooms, and in the coming weeks the new Tonganoxie Bark Park will be open for dogs to roam within its fences.
There’s a children’s climbing apparatus for a portion of the grounds outside the dog play areas that’s expected to arrive around May 1, according to Tonganoxie Recreation Commission Director Brad Eccles. Installation will take place shortly after delivery.
As for the dog play areas, Eccles said staff will spread a light overseeding of grass where the vegetation is a little thinner. He also would like to mow the lawn a couple times before unleashing the canines on the large-dog and small-dog areas.
“We want to let the grass mature and get a couple mowings on it,” he said.”We’re just kind of waiting right now for the grass to grow and spring showers to start.”
He’s anticipating the dog park areas to open sometime in May.
Eccles also plans to do some sort of small ceremony with officials from Hill’s to celebrate the opening. There’s only 20 parking spots at the park, so they will look to have a smaller ceremony.
TRC gymnasium floor to be replaced this summer
The TRC Activity Center gymnasium will be closed for several weeks this summer so that crews can install a new floor.
The floor sustained some damage last spring, as drains were backed up. Water got under the floor, causing some warping.
Eccles said the project was earmarked for 4-8 weeks starting in May, as the facilities are in less demand in those months. Though the gym will be closed to patrons, the rest of the center will be available during that time, with some shorter hours of operation at night and on weekends.
TRC Easter Egg Hunt to be in one locale
This year’s Tonganoxie Recreation Commission Easter Egg Hunt will take place at a new location.
The hunt will be 3-4 p.m. at the TRC ball fields at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
Youths ages 0-3 will have their hunt at 3:05 p.m., while youths 4-6 will begin their hunt at 3:15 p.m. Youths ages 7-10 will then run for the eggs at 3:25 p.m.
