The new boutique mall at 316 S. Main, Suite A in Tonganoxie was packed with customers and then the crowd filed outside for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

More than 50 vendors have their wares inside the mall, which has been transformed from what once was the city maintenance shop.

Tonganoxie Mayor David Frese was at the ribbon cutting and spoke about how it was hard to imagine crews at one time working on snow plows inside the building that now is home to crafts, soaps, jewelry and more.

Frese joined owner Angie Faherty and assistant manager Karla Nuckolls, as well as Tonganoxie Business Association representatives Joanna Eibes and Raquel Hamman for the ribbon cutting.

It was a busy day Saturday in Tonganoxie despite some chilly weather. It also was the annual spring citywide garage sale.

And, a new bakery was open for business.

Sweet Freedom Bakery had a soft opening Friday and Saturday at 307 Ridge St., Suite 106 near Brothers Market.

The bakery formerly was Shana Cakes in Topeka and then Wetmore. It serves gluten-free and other allergy-free baked goods and is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Pickups also are available daily by request. The number there is 913-416-3800.
