Military Vehicle and D-Day Encampment returns Saturday to Tonganoxie

The event will be Saturday at VFW Park, 900 E. First St.
Tonganoxie VFW Post 9271 and American Legion Post 41 are commemorating the 81st anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944, with a military vehicle show and D-Day Encampment.
There also will be two skirmishes between Allied and Axis re-enactors Saturday.
All military vehicles and World War II re-enacting units are invited to set up their camps and motor pool their military vehicles Friday afternoon.
Festivities begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with vehicle and re-enactor registration.
Registration and a biscuits and gravy breakfast at the VFW Post Home will be 7:30-9 a.m. The Tonganoxie VFW Women’s Auxiliary will host the breakfast.
Camps will open to the general public at 9 a.m. That’s also when there will be a post of the colors ceremony.
World War II weapons demonstrations will start at 10:30 a.m. and a World War II skirmish will start at 11 a.m. with “D-Day: Battle for Foy” at the battlefield location.
The VFW will then host lunch at 11:30 a.m.
The 3rd Kansas Artillery demonstration will be noon-3 p.m. at the park and then another WWII equipment demonstration will start at 1 p.m. at the battlefield location.
At 1:30 p.m., the WWII skirmish “D-Day: The Battle for Carentan” will get started.
The 3rd Kansas Artillery demonstration at VFW Park will start at 2 p.m. as the final event of the day, with festivities set to conclude at 4 p.m.
This is the second year for the vehicle show and D-Day encampment, as the inaugural show took place last year.
