Angie Faherty, left, owner of Cedar Hills Mall, and lifelong friend Karla Nuckolls, assistant manager, stand behind the counter of the new Tonganoxie business that will have a soft opening Tuesday. More than 50 vendors offering a wide range of gifts, food and more will have space in the 2,000-square foot space on Main Street in downtown Tonganoxie. The store is in the former city maintenance shop near Third and Main streets.Angie Faherty has dreamed about opening a boutique mall since she worked part-time in a similar business years ago.
On Tuesday, that vision is set to become reality.
Cedar Hills Mall will have its soft opening that day at 316 Main St. in downtown Tonganoxie. The business has 54 vendor spaces. All have been secured by vendors. There already is a waiting list.
“I worked at a mall when my kids were young,” Faherty said. “But I couldn’t raise them on that living.”
Faherty named the business after Cedar Street, where she grew up in Eudora.

A sign near the entrance of Cedar Hills Mall will be placed on the wall. The spelling of Layne is a nod to owner Angie Faherty’s granddaughter, as Layne is her middle name.
Near the entrance is Memory Layne, a nod to her granddaughter, whose middle name is Layne. There will be vintage photos of the mall’s building, which was utilized for many years at the city’s maintenance shop.
Since those days of working in a mall, Faherty designed her own house. It was through the design of one of a house several years ago that she met her future husband, who built some cabinets for her house.
Cedar Hills Mall covers roughly 2,000 square feet on the south side of the building, while Artisan Cabinet, which her husband, David Faherty owns, occupies another 2,000 square feet on the north side of the building.
She designed the layout of the mall and then her husband and his employees brought the sketches to life. Included in their work is the expansive sales counter, where Angie also will cover her duties with Artisan Cabinet.
“His guys are really, really talented,” Angie said of her husband’s staff with Artisan Cabinet.
Working alongside Angie at the mall will be her best friend of 48 years, Karla Nuckolls. The two have been friends since childhood growing up in Eudora. Nuckolls will serve as assistant manager.
“Karla’s very observant and she’ll be good,” Angie said. “She’s my right hand man, always has been. I wouldn’t want to do this without her.
“She’s really talented with crafts.
A spiral staircase leads to a mezzanine area at the mall where the two will create grab-and-go gift baskets to be sold in some of the spaces.
Angie said she started advertising “store owner” space in January, and by February, all of the spaces were spoken for.
There will be a wide array of shopping options at the mall: fresh flowers, boutique clothing, packaged gifts, succulents, homemade signs, photography, vintage items, home decor, laser printed shirts and tumblers, food vendors, bird houses and outside decor, to name a few.
There also will be a year-round Christmas corner at the store and the Gospel Train, a space created by her father-in-law that offers various Christian books, artwork and more. Plans call for a model train set to be suspended above that space, which Angie said should be a fun draw for children visiting the store.
Anyone passing by the mall will notice increased activity starting today, as vendors will begin moving products and items into their spaces.
Again, the soft opening will be Tuesday and then grand opening festivities will be 5-7 p.m. April 4 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 5. There also will be a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. April 5.
The plan is for regular hours to be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Angie said she’d also like to be open late one night a month, likely on a Thursday. There’s also a possibility that vendor space will expand into the Artisan Cabinet area of the building.
A full listing with descriptions of store owners within the mall can be viewed at cedarhillsmall.com.
The building’s exterior has been painted black, while the interior of the mall is black with mostly wooden accents and various lighting.
“I keep up with the trends,” Angie explained. “I like to design and decorate. When I see a trend, it just sticks with me.”
As for her design for the space, the Artisan Cabinet folks came through in bringing her renderings to life, Angie noted.
“They made it look exactly like I envisioned,” she said. “I think Tongie’s been waiting for something like this.”
The grand opening weekend should be perfect timing, as that also happens to be the spring citywide garage sale for Tonganoxie. It’s all an opportunity for two lifelong friends to kick off their new endeavor.
I’m glad she got to do her dream,” Nuckolls said. “This was a passion of hers. And I enjoy crafts.”
