THS swept both the Class 4A boys and girls discus events Friday at the state track and field championships in Wichita.

Tucker McGuire and Adalyn Schooler won the boys and girls discus titles, respectively.

McGuire, a THS senior, won the 4A discus title Friday with a throw of 172 feet, 6 inches. McGuire hit the winning mark on his second attempt. He finished more than 2 feet ahead of Chanute senior Canton Fitzmaurice, who threw it 170-4 for second.

McGuire entered state ranked No. 5 after regionals with a distance of 153-6, but improved on that mark by 19 feet at state.

Baldwin’s Brendan O’Connor headed to Wichita with the best throw of 165-9.

On the girls side, Schooler saved her best for last, but as it turned out, all of her throws would have won her a gold medal.

The THS sophomore threw the discus 130-5 on her sixth and final attempt after marks of 128-2, 124-1, 28-6, 128-2 and 124-8.

Schooler came into state with the second-best regionals throw at 128-0. Rock Creek’s Rory Pitzer led the state qualifiers with a 133-4 distance, but the fellow sophomore finished fourth at state with a 115-0. Augusta freshman Rylee Jay placed second with a throw of 121-2, while Rose Hill senior took bronze with a heave of 117-10.

Tonganoxie earned two other medals Friday on the girls side.

Adlen Johnson medaled in the shot put. The freshman placed sixth with a throw of 36-3.75. Her first attempt was her best mark in Wichita. THS sophomore Reece Schmidt tied for seventh with a height of 5-2 in the high jump, which also qualified her for the medal stand.

The 4×800 boys relay team placed sixth Saturday morning. The team of Jett Gilmore, Jack Reishman, Parker Welsh and Solomon Carter finished the relay in 8 minutes, 12.6 seconds. Wamego won the race with a time of 7:55.56.

Carter completed his decorated high school running career with a third-place finish in the 800. The senior finished the race with a time of 1:56.15. Holton’s Brayden Peek won the race with a 1:54.65 time.

Todd Brown also medaled Saturday in the 100 meter finals. He placed eighth with a time of 11.17 seconds. Labette County’s Jamaal Jackson tied a state record with a time of 10.65.

The Tonganoxie boys finished 15th in the team rankings with 20 points, while the THS girls finished 18th with 14.5 points.

Andale swept the team titles in 4A. The Andale girls scored 91 points, while the AHS boys tallied 68.5. Eudora finished second on the girls side with 67.

The Andale boys won their fourth straight state title, while the Andale girls won the team title for the sixth time in the last seven state meets. Eudora won last year’s title to break Andale’s streak.

Mill Valley won the girls 6A title, while St. James Academy won its third straight state title. Beloit won the 3A title and Hoxie the 2A title. Ellis claimed the 1A title, blocking Washington County from a third straight state title. WCHS finished third this season.

Olathe West won its second straight boys 6A title, as did Kapaun Mount Carmel in 5A and Holcomb in 3A. Central Heights won the 2A title, while Axtell once again nabbed the 1A title. Axtell now has won three straight team titles.
