A Tonganoxie holiday tradition is back for another year this weekend.

The Tonganoxie Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade will start at 5 p.m. Saturday at Fourth and Delaware streets. The parade will head west, with the tree lighting at 5:45 p.m. outside Tonganoxie Public Library.

This year’s event theme is candy canes. Organizers already have gotten Fourth Street ready with candy canes and other decorations dotting the sidewalks.

There will be local vendors, a DJ, performers and photo opportunities with Santa following the parade. On the other end of the downtown district, Cedar Hills Mall will be having a stocking stuffer stroll from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at 316 S. Main St.

Mayor David Frese will light the tree with assistance from Tonganoxie students during the lighting ceremony.

A citywide food drive will conclude Friday. The library is accepting donations, as is Good Shepherd Thrift Shop and Food Bank. Students in Tonganoxie schools and Genesis Christian Academy also are collecting items. The drive started Monday.

All donations will go to Good Shepherd.
